Flush or Surface-Mounted Shower Tray: Which to Choose
When someone swaps a bath for a shower, the same question nearly always comes up: flush with the floor, or sat on top of it? There’s no single answer. It depends on the bathroom you’ve got, the budget, and who’s going to use the shower every day. Let’s go through it calmly, no sales fluff.
What each option means
A flush shower tray sits level with the floor, fully built into the flooring. There’s no step: you walk into the bathroom and step into the shower at the same level. It’s the look you see in hotels and magazine bathrooms, and the most comfortable option if there are older people or anyone with reduced mobility at home.
A surface-mounted tray is fitted on top of the existing floor. You’re left with a small step, around 3 cm with our low-profile trays, and it goes in without lifting the floor. It’s the quick route when you want to refresh the shower in a couple of days without turning the bathroom into a building site.
In both cases we’re talking about the same product: mineral-filled resin trays made to measure. The difference is in how they’re fitted, not in the piece itself.
Flush: the best-looking and most accessible option
Recessing the floor to set the tray level has its reward: the bathroom looks bigger, cleaner and more modern. And above all, the barrier of the step disappears, which turns the shower into a safe space for any age.
In return, it asks for a bit more work. You have to chase out and lower the floor to house the tray and the waste, and get a good fall towards the trap so water runs without pooling. It’s not difficult for an experienced fitter, but it’s real building work and worth budgeting for. If you’d like the detail of the process, we walk through it step by step in our guide on how to fit a flush shower tray.
If there’s someone older or with mobility issues at home, a flush tray isn’t a design whim: it’s real accessibility from day one.
Surface-mounted: fast, clean and easy on the budget
The big advantage of surface-mounted is simplicity. No lifting the floor, a shorter install, and labour costs that drop noticeably. For a quick refresh, a rental flat, or when the floor is in good shape and you’d rather not touch it, it’s the logical choice.
The only price you pay is that 3 cm step. For most people it’s neither here nor there; for someone with mobility difficulties it can be a nuisance. That’s why it’s worth thinking about who’s going to use the shower before you decide.
Comparison table
| Aspect | Flush | Surface-mounted |
|---|---|---|
| Looks | Top-notch, no step | Very good, with a minimal step |
| Accessibility | Full | Good, except for the step |
| Building work | Recess floor and waste | Minimal, no floor lifting |
| Install time | Longer | Shorter |
| Install cost | Higher | Tighter |
| Best for | New bathroom, older users | Quick refresh, no building work |
So, which do I choose?
Keep this simple rule in mind:
- Flush if you’re after the most polished look, if there are older people at home, or if you’re renovating the bathroom thoroughly anyway and already have the fitter chasing out walls.
- Surface-mounted if you want to refresh the shower fast, with no building work and a tight budget, and the 3 cm step is no problem for anyone.
The main thing is that the same Aquatit tray works for both installs. We make them to measure, so the tray fits whether you recess it or sit it on top. You can choose between finishes such as Smooth, Elite, or the texture of Slate, which gives a welcome anti-slip feel day to day.
Made to your bathroom, no surprises
We work to any dimension, from 60×60 right up to 100×200, and you’ll see the price straight away for the sizes you need. One of the most common in renovations is the 80×120, but if your alcove isn’t standard, we make it to the millimetre. Every tray carries a C3 anti-slip rating, comes with a waste trap and grille, and ships across Europe.
Whether you settle on flush or surface-mounted, the sensible starting point is the exact measurements of your alcove. Set up your tray made-to-measure and, if you’ve any doubt about the install or the finish, write to us from the contact page. We’ll help you get it right before you buy.
